The resort was founded by real estate pioneer Alfred Kaskel in 1962, with the name "Doral" coming from an amalgamation of the first names of Kaskel and his wife, Dorris.
The Doral Golf Resort & Spa was formerly known as the Doral Country Club and was the sister hotel to the famous Doral Hotel on the ocean in Miami Beach, Florida.
The Doral Golf Resort & Spa and its hotel are today part of Marriott International. In 2009, the Pritikin Longevity Center moved its entire operation from Aventura, Florida, to the campus of the Doral Golf Resort & Spa. The Pritikin facilities (medical, gym, exercise rooms, kitchen, dining room, lecture rooms, and offices) occupy parts of the spa building. Pritikin guests normally stay in the hotel suites (in a building next to the spa building) or in Lodges 2 and 3. The hotel suites and the lodges are operated by Marriott.
Golf courses and tournaments
The Doral Resort features five championship golf courses:
- The TPC Blue Monster at Doral
- The Great White Course
- The Gold Course
- The Red Course
- The McLean Course
The Blue Monster is the most well-known of the resort's courses.[citation needed] It played host to the Doral Open on the PGA Tour from 1962 to 2006. Since 2007 the WGC-Cadillac Championship has made its home at the Blue Monster after having previously been played at various courses around the world. In 2009, the Blue Monster joined the PGA Tour's Tournament Players Club network of courses and rebranded as the TPC Blue Monster at Doral.[1]
The resort's other courses have also played host to important events. The Gold Course hosted the PGA Tour's Qualifying Tournament in 1999, and the Red Course hosted The Office Depot on the LPGA Tour in 2000.
