Lopez was born in Sweden to Uruguayan settler parents, later moving to Uruguay, then back to Sweden.

With Soen
On May 28, 2010, it was announced that Martin Lopez, bassist Steve DiGiorgio, singer Joel Ekelöf and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis had joined forces in the band SOEN.[1]
With Opeth
Lopez joined Opeth in 1998, after leaving Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth on whose album Once Sent From the Golden Hall he played. With Opeth, he recorded the albums My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation and Ghost Reveries.
Session work
Lopez has performed drums for Anuryzm (a band hailing from Lebanon, and based in U.A.E.) on their debut album entitled 'Worm's Eye View'.
Equipment
According to the factsheet on Opeth's official website, Lopez currently endorses Premier drums and sticks, and Sabian cymbals.
Personal
On May 12, 2006, Martin Lopez, due to health reasons, permanently left Opeth to be replaced by Martin Axenrot.[2] Lopez now concentrates fully on his old band, Fifth to Infinity[3]
He became a father in 2008.[4]
